At Penygarn Community Primary School, there are many opportunities for the children to work outdoors. We aim to offer the children regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self esteem through hands on learning experiences in woodland areas.
The activities that the children will take part in at Forest School will be linked to the topics being covered in the year groups using the Cornerstones Curriculum. The children will be taught how to safely use tools and equipment that are appropriate to Forest School.
The Forest School site is positioned at the top of the school playing fields in the wooded area. The area has a working environment and a log circle which is used for a seating and learning area. There is a second site that is used which is closer to the school and is on the bank outside the Year 1 class. This site will be used to combat the ecological impact that Forest Schools has on our wooded area.
Among the benefits to children attending Forest Schools are: improved physical and motor skills; improved language and communications skills; improved social skills, including team working; improved knowledge and understanding of the environment; increased self-confidence and self-belief; and increased motivation and concentration.
